Stockton Surgery Center <br />Facilities & Environment Manual <br />Section: Hazardous Materials <br />Title: Hazard Communication Standard/Plan <br />Policy # <br />OBJECTIVE <br />➢ To reduce the incidence of chemically or biologically related occupational illness and <br />injury <br />➢ To increase the availability of hazard information for staff members to protect <br />themselves against hazardous materials in the workplace <br />To follow the key provisions of the OSHA Hazard Communication Standard <br />HAZARD COMMUNICATION PLAN <br />1. The Hazard Communication Standard applies to all employers whose employees <br />may be exposed to hazardous substances. <br />2. All hazardous substances found in the workplace under normal or reasonably foreseeable <br />emergency conditions (i.e. spill or release of chemical) are included. <br />3. Chemical manufacturers, importers, and distributors are required to assess the physical and <br />health hazards associated with the substances they produce or repackage. This information must <br />be conveyed to employers by means of labels and Material Safety Data Sheets. <br />4. Employers should receive MSDS from the manufacturers upon the initial purchase of a <br />hazardous substance. <br />5. This plan ensures patient, visitors, staff, and physician safety by complying with the OSHA <br />Communication Standard and requires that: <br />a. all containers are appropriately labeled <br />b. MSDS are actively used and all employees have access to the MSDS <br />C. all employees receive effective hazard communication <br />d. a master chemical inventory list of all hazardous materials be developed <br />6. Information and training on hazardous substances must be provided at the time of initial <br />assignment and when a new hazardous substance is introduced into the workplace. <br />PROCEDURE <br />The written Hazard Communication Program for the center will consist of the following: <br />1. Identification of chemicals and hazard determination for all chemical products. <br />2. Substitution of non- or less hazardous chemicals whenever possible. <br />3. Material Safety Data Sheets for ALL chemicals. <br />4.
