•
Ar, 3
Stockton Surgery Center
Facilities & Environment Manual
8. Medical waste is placed in a red biohazard bag and contained separately from regular trash at the
point of generation. If medical waste is inadvertently mixed with regular trash, the wastes are
considered infectious. Tissue that is removed but not sent to pathology is disposed of in the red
pathology waste bucket. Chemotherapeutic waste is not generated at this facility.
9. Medical waste is stored in rigid containers with tight -fitting lids which are labeled as Biohazard
Waste. Full medical waste bags are tied before being placed in medical waste Biohazard
containers for pickup.
10. Disposable sharps are placed in puncture resistant containers without being bent, broken, or
recapped by hand. Needles may be recapped by using a one -handed technique, hemostat or other
needle recapping device. Filled sharps containers will be sealed and placed in the infectious waste
biohazard bags.
11. Full medical waste containers are stored in a locked area until removed from the facility at regular
intervals by a certified medical waste hauler. The maximum storage time of medical waste at the
facility is seven days. Medical waste is stored at a temperature above 32 degrees Fahrenheit.
12. Medical waste spills are cleaned by a staff member wearing appropriate PPE. The spill is
contained with disposable towels which are disposed of in red biohazard bags. The area is then
disinfected with Sani-Cloth Plus germicidal disposable cloths and allowed to air dry for a period
of 5 minutes for decontamination. For spills requiring mopping, a solution of Quik Fill 930
Detergent Disinfectant is used (one-half ounce per gallon) and allowed to air dry for a period of 10
minutes for decontamination.
14. Blood and body fluids in suction containers are treated with an absorbent powder that solidifies
the liquid. The suction containers with the solidified contents are disposed of with the biohazard
trash.
15. Medical waste tracking documents are received from the contracted hauling company and
compared with monthly invoices. Discrepancies are noted and reported to the Safety Officer.
Records from previous years are maintained on site.
Effective Date: 3/5/2009 8:34 AM6/1/2009
Revised Date:
Hazardous Materials Waste Management-MASTER.doc
J:rADWuEWRE1F'4/RA.
lip
Internal
Annually (Quality Council)
Material Safety Data Sheet Review
Internal
Annually (Quality Council)
Staff Training Records
Internal
Quarterly (Quality Council)
Review of HAZ-MAT or waste incidents
Internal/External
Any discrepancies reported quarterly
Biohazardous Tracking Manifests(Quality
Council
Effective Date: 3/5/2009 8:34 AM6/1/2009
Revised Date:
Hazardous Materials Waste Management-MASTER.doc
