Stockton Surgery Center <br />Facilities & Environment Manual <br />a. Make appropriate notifications. <br />b. Notify Fire Department if needed for assistance. <br />4. Safety Officer: <br />The Safety Officer, or designee, will: <br />a. Respond to all chemical spills. <br />b. Insure appropriate spill control/clean-up procedures are provided and followed. <br />C. Insure documentation is completed according to procedure. <br />d. Insure fire department or outside agencies are notified if indicated. <br />CLASS II AND III CHEMICAL SPILL CLEAN-UP PROCEDURES <br />When one pint or more of a HAZARDOUS CHEMICAL or any amount of an EXTREMELY <br />TOXIC substance is spilled: (Class Il and in) <br />a. Evacuate the room <br />b. Close the door <br />C. Notify department manager and safety officer. <br />d. If spill is in a well ventilated area, it can be cleaned up using hazard spill kit according <br />to procedure (Class II). <br />e. If spill is in a confined area and fumes are present, notify fire department for hazardous <br />material clean up (Class III). <br />2. If the substance spilled is flammable, remove all ignition sources before sealing the room. <br />3. All contaminated clothing must be removed immediately. Clothes must be laundered before reuse <br />or disposed of as hazardous waste. <br />4. Exposed eyes and skin must be washed with water for 15 minutes. Note: Contact lenses should <br />be removed immediately. Persons with eye exposure, skin irritation, or contact with an extremely <br />toxic substance must report for Immediate medical attention. <br />5. Small spills (one pint or less) may be cleaned up by department personnel or surgery attendant <br />(Class I). <br />Most strong acids may be absorbed with an inert absorbent and then neutralized with a <br />slurry of sodium bicarbonate, calcium hydroxide (slaked lime), or sodium carbonate <br />(soda ash). <br />b.
