POLICY
Lodi Memorial Hospital has procedures in place to address a leak or spill of hazardous material.
U. PURPOSE
To ensure that safety measures are in place to protect patients, visitors, staff and the community from a
hazardous material leak or spill.
III. PROCEDURE
A. In the event of a hazardous material leak or spill, Environmental Services must be contacted
immediately to confine the spill and to clean the area.
1. Surfaces are decontaminated with a quaternary ammonium solution with a minimum of 400
ppm active agent.
2. The solution is applied to the entire surface and allowed to remain in contact for a minimum of
10 -minutes to complete the disinfection process.
3. Interior storage rooms, counters and surfaces that may have come in contact with medical
waste contamination must be disinfected.
4. Portable tubs and rigid containers are removed from the building and taken to the north supply
deliver/loading area at either facility for disinfecting.
5. Materials used or collected, including excess solution is absorbed into disposable paper
toweling and discarded directly into medical waste containers even though it is now rendered
non -hazardous.
6. All exterior areas where decontamination is performed must be washed down with water prior
to leaving the area. This clean rinse water is allowed to run into the storm drain.
7. Reports of all spills, exposures or injuries resulting from the handling of medical waste must
be reported to the Facilities Coordinator for review and follow-up. Documentation and further
reporting will occur as needed ending with the hospital Occurrence Reporting system.
Director Approval:
'[_ `
Name ,
Signature
REVISED: 11/04
L:\P&P\EOC\D- MEDICAL WASTED-8420-80.doc
Administrative Approval:
7
Date
19
