POLICY <br />A. Environmental Services staff is responsible for seeing that the medical waste produced by Lodi <br />Memorial Hospital is handled safely and in accordance with California rules and regulations. <br />Facilities Management maintains documentation related to medical waste handling. <br />B. Pharmacy Services staff is responsible for removing and managing the filled pharmaceutical waste <br />containers. <br />II. PURPOSE <br />To ensure that medical waste is handled and stored in a safe and secure manner to minimize exposure to <br />patients, visitors, staff, and community. <br />III. PROCEDURE <br />A. When cleaning patient care areas, Environmental Services places all medical waste into red biohazard <br />bags, exchanges full sharps containers for empty ones and transports collection tubs to designated <br />areas for off-site disposal or sterilization, according to policy. <br />B. Pharmaceutical -generated waste is managed by Pharmacy Services until placed into the locked storage <br />area outside the hospital building.
