JOSEPH'S MEDICAL CENTER POLICY & PROCEUIR <br />• <br />BIOHAZARDOUS WASTE POLICY # <br />MANAGEMENT '.g- 1 of <br />To provide guidelines for identifying, storing, transporting, and disposing of regulated <br />medical wastes that qualifies as biohazardous waste and to institute methods of handling <br />biohazardous waste to prevent infection in the hospital and community. <br />It is the policy of the hospital to protect the health and safety of all persons directly <br />involved in the handling and disposal of biohazardous waste. To ensure that there is a <br />minimal risk to patients, staff, the public, and the environment from biohazardous waste <br />and to comply with all State of California regulations on disposal of biohazardous waste. <br />,7 - t U; I Iii! II I [•P►E-'i <br />A. The following are considered Biohazardous Waste and are disposed of in red <br />plastic bags imprinted with the biohazardous symbol: <br />1. Laboratory Wastes: All specimens of blood/blood products, excretions and <br />secretions. All discarded live and attenuated vaccines, culture dishes and <br />devices used to transfer, inoculate, and mix cultures. <br />2. Blood or body fluids: All liquid blood elements or other regulated body fluids, <br />or articles contaminated with blood or body fluids. Wastes that contain <br />recognizable fluid blood or other potentially infectious materials. <br />3. Pathology Wastes: All tissue and placentas. <br />4. Surgical Specimens: Human parts and tissue. <br />5. Blood/body fluid filled containers (i.e., sealed drainage systems, suction <br />canister liners, and surgically implanted drains). <br />6. Hemodialysis waste, including arterial lines and filter. <br />7. Isolation waste: Waste contaminated with excretions, exudates, or <br />secretions from patients isolated due only to highly communicable diseases. <br />8. Sharps: Sharps, needles, blades, broken glass and arterial or intravenous <br />cannulas.
