Urine, feces, saliva, sputum, nasal secretions, sweat, tears, or emesis are not <br />considered biohazardous and are disposed of in the regular trash. If they contain <br />visible blood, they are considered biohazardous and are disposed of in <br />biohazardous trash containers. <br />PROCEDURE <br />A. Biohazardous waste, as defined, is placed in the closest medical waste container <br />separately from other waste and is routinely picked up by Housekeeping Services <br />except for the following: Pathology waste and Surgical specimens are handled <br />according to Housekeeping's Pathology policy. <br />B. All persons required to handle biohazardous wastes or materials will be provided <br />with appropriate orientation, personal protective equipment, and on-the-job training <br />by their immediate supervisor or designee. <br />C. Segregating, storing, and transportation: <br />Biohazardous medical waste will be segregated from other waste by <br />containing it in a disposable red plastic bag that is a minimum of 1.5 mm <br />thick and impervious to moisture. <br />2. Biohazardous waste is separated and contained at the point of generation. <br />It is transported from the generation point to the secure storage area by <br />using rigid biohazard transportation carts that are covered and labeled <br />with the international biohazard symbol. <br />3. The storage area is for authorized personnel only. Signs are posted in <br />English and Spanish, identifiable at 25 feet. <br />4. Housekeeping will clean up all spills of biohazardous waste immediately. <br />Any injury from handling biohazardous waste is reported to Employee <br />Health. <br />5. Medical waste that has not been autoclaved is not stored for more than <br />seven days on the premises. <br />6. The following departments or areas are approved for all patient care waste <br />to be processed as biohazardous waste: Surgery, Short Stay Surgery, <br />Labor and Delivery, Dialysis, Central Processing, SICU, and <br />Decontamination. <br />Issue Date: 02/92 <br />Revised: 01/06, 06/06 <br />
