UNIVERSAL PRECAUTIONS (BSI) <br />C <br />Gloves will be available in every patient room, treatment/examination <br />room, and any other area where exposure to blood/body fluids can be <br />anticipated. Gloves will be changed between each patient and/or each <br />task involving todv and/or-bodysubstance. <br />c. Masks/Protective Eyewear/Face Shields <br />Masks/protective eyewear (glasses or goggles)/face shields will be worn <br />during procedures that are likely to generate droplets or splash blood <br />or other body fluids to prevent exposure of mucous membranes of the <br />mouth, nose, and eyes. A selection of goggles will be maintained in <br />every patient care area. <br />d: Gowns/Aprons <br />Plastic/paper/cloth long -sleeve owns/aprons will be worn during <br />R procedures that are likely to generate splashes of blood or othef body <br />fluids. A supply of disposaable gowns will be maintained in every <br />patient care area. <br />e. Handwashing <br />Hands and other skin surfaces will be washed immediately and <br />thoroughly: <br />1) After unprotected (unglove) contact with blood and body fluids or <br />other body substances. <br />2) Before and after every contact with each patient. <br />3) Following removal of gloves. <br />Hands are to be washed with soap, running water, and friction for lO <br />seconds, paying particular attention to around and under fingernails <br />and between the fingers. <br />f. Communication. <br />1) Nursing Service <br />BSI (or Universal Precautions) will be recorded on patient care <br />plan and chart every shift. Include the following information on <br />Kardex: <br />a) Any airborne disease/condition. <br />b) AIDS, HBsAG positive. <br />Notify receiving unit/department of patient's airborne disease/ <br />l condition by phone prior to transfer. Tag front of chart. <br />
