All health-care workers will take precautions to prevent injuries <br />caused by: <br />1) Needles, scalpels, and other sharp instruments. <br />2) Cleaning used instruments. <br />3) Disposal of used needles. <br />4) Handling sharp instruments after procedures. <br />To prevent needlestick injuries, used needles are not to be recapped, <br />purposely bent or broken by hand, removed from disposable sy.-inyes, or <br />otherwise manipulated by hand. After they are used, disposa:,le <br />syringes and needles, scalpel blades, and other sharp items -,il be <br />placed in puncture -resistant containers for disposal; the punc`ur,-- <br />resisLant..cgntainers should be located as close as practical to the <br />point -of -use area, i.e., patient rooms, treatment rooms. Large-bore <br />reusable needles will be placed in a puncture -resistant container for <br />transport to the reprocessing area. t' <br />5) Sharps disposal units will be replaced -5y Uousekeep _ng�a,.: <br />6) Sharps'•containers will be capped when 3/4 full and discard:c: in the <br />infectious waste container. <br />For any needle -stick injury, see Guidelines for Employee Exposuroa to <br />Blood. <br />h. Mouth -to -Mouth Resuscitation <br />Although saliva has not been implicated in HIV transmission, to <br />minimize the need for erRrgencymouth-to-mouth resuscitation, <br />mouthpieces, resuscitation bags, or other ventilation devices will be <br />available for use in areas in which the need for resuscitation is <br />predictable. <br />i. Health-care workers who have exudative lesions or weeping dermatitis <br />will refrain fron a•11 direct patient care and from handling patient - <br />care equipment until the condition resolves. These workers will report <br />to the employee health office. <br />
