UNIVERSAL PRECAUTIONS (BSI) <br />i. Scientific equipment that has been contaminated with blood or other <br />body fluids will be decontaminated and cleaned before being repaired in <br />.the laboratory or transported to the manufacturer. <br />J. All persons will wash their hands after completing laboratory activ- <br />ities and should remove protective clothing before leaving the lab. <br />k. When drawing blood from patients, hands will be washed and a new -pair <br />of gloves worn between each patient. <br />1. All waste from the laboratory will be considered infectious and handled <br />as per existing policy for infectious waste. Examples of non- <br />infectious waste include the output of: <br />1) Clerical desk of lab <br />2) _Secretary offices of pathology <br />3) Pathology offices <br />4) Lab director/supervisor offices <br />j'. Physicians Role in Iinplementing BSI <br />a. <br />It is not necessary to wirte an order for "isolation precautions" in <br />the patient's chart. <br />b. <br />If the patient has a disease which is transmitted in whole or in part <br />by the airborne route, this information should be written on the ORDER <br />} <br />SHEET so the nurse can place a STOP SIGN ALERT on the patient's door. <br />c. <br />Each physician needs to evaluate his/her own interactions with the <br />patient and. use barriers as appropriate, based on anticipated contct <br />with body substances, not the patient's diagnosis of infection. <br />d. <br />Physicians need to know their own chickenpox and rubelia status. <br />e. <br />Physicians -who have frequent contact with blood or body fluids should <br />be immunized against hepatitis B. <br />ci Role <br />of Nurses and Other Direct Care Providers in Implementing BSI <br />a. <br />Each nurse needs to evaluate his/her own interactions with the patient <br />and use barriers as appropriate based on anticipated contact with body <br />substances, not the patient's diagnosis of infection. Use the guide- <br />lines described to make these judgenients. <br />b. <br />If the patient has a disease which is transmitted in whole or in part <br />by the airborne route, the nurse is responsible for triage of persons <br />wishing to enter the patient's room. Use the guidelines to make these <br />judgements. <br />C. <br />All direct care providers need to know their own chickenpox, rubella, <br />measles, and mumps status and participate in the annual TB skin testing <br />program. <br />
