POLICY AND PROCEDURE <br />Disposal Of Infectious Waste <br />• -- <br />All infectious waste, as defined by the facility's "Infection <br />Control Committee" (in compliance with the California Health and <br />Safety code) , will be collected by nursing in designated containers <br />located in the utility room and then stored in a locked area under <br />the supervision of the Housekeeping Supervisor, until picked -up for <br />disposal by ?UF 1 asA-e SyAI—--- -Ir (I -.\t-6Cnia 'mac. <br />(Name of Waste Company) <br />1 As a minimum, all infectious waste will be collected within thc <br />area of origin and shall be bagged in "red" plastic bags <br />of at least 165 gram dart impact resistance. The collection bag <br />will be tied prior to transporting to the storage are_ <br />plastic bag • - placed • r - plastic bag, <br />the outside • bag likely to • - soiled. <br />2. All used needles and syringes are to be considered as <br />infectious waste. In accordance with the state law, they must <br />be placed in a puncture proof "Sharps" container, which <br />prevents retrieval-. When the" <br />SharpsBB container is 3/4 full, <br />the container must be sealed and placed in the "Infectious <br />Waste Storage". <br />3. The nurses who have collected the infectious waste, and <br />subsequently bagged and tied it, will then route it to the <br />collection containers in the Utility Room. The containers and <br />the Utility Room door will have a sign indicating "Infectious <br />Waste". <br />4. The housekeeping staff will take the tied bagged infectious <br />waste from the collection containers to the locked storage <br />areas, in back of the facility, three (3) times each day. <br />S. In the • _d storage area, in of the facility, the <br />bagged infectious waste will be placed directly into a leak- <br />proof, rodent -proof, storage container with a tight fitting <br />provided and maintained by ? <br />The storage containerbe Identified _ <br />nd <br />labeled with the words "Infectious Waste" or the international bio <br />hazard symbol and the word "Bio -hazard". I <br />6. The storage containers will be located at the facility in an <br />area that is secured to deny access to unauthorized personnel. <br />This area will display prominent warning signs in English <br />(Caution -Infectious Waste Storage Area - Unauthorized Persons <br />
