v9 <br />Appendix B <br />Medication Administration -Specific Procedzzres <br />CONTROLLED MEDICATIONS -DISPOSAL <br />POLICY included in the Drug Enforcement Administratiun <br />(DEA) classification as controlled substances are subject to <br />special handling, storaue, disposal, and record keeping in the <br />facility in accordance with federal and state laws and regulations. <br />PROCEDURE 1 . The director of nursing is responsible for the facility's compliance with <br />federal and state laws and regulations in the handling of controlled <br />Appendix 13 medications. Only authorized licensed nursing and pharmacy personnel <br />have access to controlled medications. <br />When a dose of a controlled medication is removed from a container for <br />administration but refused by the patient or not given for any reason, it is <br />not placed back in the container. It is destroyed in the presence of two <br />licensed clinicians, and the disposal is documented on the accountability <br />record on the line representing that dose. The same process applies to the <br />disposal of unused partial tablets and unused portions of single dose <br />ampules and doses of controlled substances wasted for any reason. <br />3. Controlled medications remaining in the facility after a patient has been <br />discharged for any reason, the order is discontinued, or a medication has <br />expired, are disposed of in the facility, as directed by state laws, and <br />regulations, and/or the DEA. Appropriate records must be maintained. <br />4. In accordance with California regulations, all medications, including <br />controlled medications, will be disposed using appropriate <br />pharmaceutical waste procedures. They will not be flushed down sewer <br />or water drainage system.
