Section Disposal of Medications, Syringes and Needles Page 1 of 1 <br />5.4 <br />Disposal of Medications 12/08 <br />1. Discontinued medications and/or medications left in the nursing care center after a <br />resident's discharge, which do not qualify for return to the pharmacy, are identified <br />and removed from current medication supply in a timely manner for disposition. <br />2. Medications included in the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) classification <br />as controlled substances (or those classified as such by state regulation) are subject to <br />special handling, storage, disposal, and record keeping in the nursing care center in <br />accordance with federal and state laws and regulations. <br />3. Methods of disposition are consistent with applicable state and federal requirements, <br />local ordinances, and standards of practice. <br />' 1 1 <br />1. The director of nursing and the consultant pharmacist will monitor for compliance <br />with federal and state laws and regulations in the handling of medications. Only <br />authorized licensed nursing and pharmacy personnel have access to controlled <br />medications. <br />2. Controlled Substances listed in Schedules II, III, IV and V remaining in the nursing <br />care center after the order has been discontinued are retained in the nursing care <br />center in a securely double locked area with restricted access until destroyed as <br />outlined by state regulation. <br />a. For the State of , the appropriate method of <br />controlled substance destruction is as follows: <br />Transfer to a container for release to a pharmaceutical waste contractor <br />• Transfer medication to trash receptacle following destruction to <br />unusable consistency. <br />*Mixing medications with an undesirable substance, such as used coffee <br />grounds or kitty litter, and putting them in impermeable, non-descript <br />containers, such as empty cans or sealable bags; will further ensure the drugs <br />are not diverted.' <br />Transfer to the toilet or hopper <br />Nursing Care Center Pharmacy Policy & Procedure Manual - 02008 PharMerica Corp <br />
