CARE WEST MANTECA NURSING <br />REHAB CENTER766 0 <br />AA °T CA. CALIFORNIA <br />INFECTIOUS WASTE POLICY APR 2 3 1987 <br />ENVIROMELN-M HEALTH <br />1. Storage: FERMI-f/SERVICES <br />A. The storeroom next to D.O.N.'s office, is designated as the <br />Infectious Waste Storage area. <br />B. A sign has been posted on the door in red with white letter- <br />ing. It reads in English and Spanish, "Caution -Infectious <br />Waste Storage Area, Unauthorized Persons Keep Out". <br />C. The storeroom is to be kept locked. <br />D. The Infectious Waste will be stored in a tightly covered <br />rigid container, labeled, 11Infectious Waste". <br />1) The container will be disinfected every day by house- <br />keeping department per housekeeping isolation policy. <br />E. Infectious Waste will be double bagged in red plastic bags, <br />labeled 11Infectious Waste", securely tied. <br />2. Disposal: <br />A. All Infectious Wastes will be disposed of in ther."Infectious <br />Waste/Biohazard" container, located in the rear of the <br />building. <br />B. Bingham Service picks up and disposes of the Infectious <br />Wastes each week. <br />3. Infectious Wastes are defined as: <br />A. All dressings, nasogastric, enema and suction tubing, cath- <br />eters, drainage bags, colostomy bags, sharps, swabs, gloves, <br />or any item of disposable nature that comes in contact with <br />the patient's body secretions would be classified as infect- <br />ious waste. <br />B. All used needles, syringes and other sharps are to be dis- <br />posed of in the "Sharps Collector" provided in the Medication <br />Room. <br />C. The "Sharps Collector" is a red, rigid plastic, puncture - <br />proof container with a special one-way opening. Attached to <br />each container is a cap which is used to seal it prior to <br />disposal. The "Collector" is labeled "Infectious Waste" <br />and is marked with a "Fill to this level only" line. <br />D. When three-quarters full, the 11Collector" will be sealed <br />with the attached cap, deposited into a labeled Infectious <br />Waste bag, sealed and transported to the Infectious Waste <br />Storage Area. <br />E. Equipment, instruments, utensils and fomites of a disposable <br />nature, from the rooms of'patierits with suspected or diag- <br />nosed communicable disease requiring isolation. <br />
