PURPOSE: The purpose of these guidelines is to <br /> improve waste management practices so as to better <br /> protect the health and safety of not only the <br /> persons directly involved in the handling and <br /> disposal of hazardous or infectious wastes (ex- <br /> cluding radioactive material which requires special <br /> procedures as set forth in Title 17 of the <br /> California. Administrative Code, Sections 30269, <br /> 302859 30287-9, 30355 and 30356; and .for Federal <br /> Agencies, Title 10, Code of Federal Regulations <br /> Section 20.301 -20.305) , but also the general public® <br /> B. DEFINITION AND SPECIFICAT70 S: <br /> 1 . Hazardous waste associated with medical services <br /> are defined as those disposable materials which <br /> are potentially capable of causing disease or <br /> injury (as set .forth in Section 314(4) of Title <br /> 17, California Administrative Code) and which <br /> are generated in connection with human or <br /> animal care through out-patient and inpatient <br /> support, and certain non-medical services® <br /> Hazardous wastes include: <br /> a® Clinical and other biological laboratory <br /> wastes <br /> b® Sharps (needles, syringes, blades) after <br /> being rendered useless <br /> cJ Patient core hems (disposables, linens, <br /> personal and food service items from <br /> contaminated patient areas) <br /> d. Drugs and. chemicals <br /> 2. Normally nonhazardous waste material shall be <br /> classified as hazardous waste when there is no <br /> physical barrier or easily controlled segregation <br /> procedure at the point of origin. <br /> 3® Hazardous disposable waste materials associated <br /> with medical services are ordinarily generated <br /> in hospitals and clinics (both human and animal) , <br /> laboratories, mortuaries, pharmacies and <br /> physicians' and dentists' offices. <br /> 4, Types of hazardous disposable waste materials <br /> associated. with medical services include but are <br /> not necessarily limited to: <br />
