SHARPS DISPOSAL <br /> POLICY / PROCEDURE <br /> I. Red Disposable Sharps Collectors shall be used for collection of used needles <br /> and syringes. This is a rigid, puncture proof container with a special one- <br /> way , apn-reversible opening. EACH COLLECTOR IS TO BE DATED WHEN PLACED IN USE. <br /> 2. The Sharps Collector Container shall be kept locked in the medicine room or <br /> other area unaccessible to patients and general staff. <br /> 3. To prevent needle-stick injuries, needles should not be recapped. <br /> 4. Deposit contaminated needle and cap through opening at top of Sharps <br /> Collector. <br /> 5. Sharps Collector is to be securely capped with attached lid when 3/4 full. <br /> 6. After sealing, the Sharps Collector will be deposited into labeled infectious <br /> waste bag in the utility room. <br /> 7.
