} <br /> POLICY AND PROCEDURE: INFECTIOUS WASTE <br /> POLICY: <br /> Bio Cal Medical Group Laboratory is permitted by San <br /> Joaquin County to be an infectious waste producer. Title <br /> 22 of the California Environmental Health Law and parts of <br /> the Health and Safety Code as described in this procedure <br /> regulate the handling and disposal of infectious waste so <br /> that the safety of individuals and the environment is <br /> maintained. <br /> PROCEDURE: <br /> A. Definitions <br /> 1 . Infectious waste producer: any producer of over 100 <br /> 'i . kg (220 lbs) of infectious waste per month will be <br /> permitted by San Joaquin County. <br /> 2. Infectious waste: <br /> Laboratory waste, including cultures of etiologic <br /> agents, which pose a substantial threat to health <br /> due to their volume and virulence. "Etiologic <br /> agent" is a type of microorganism, helminth, or <br /> virus which causes, or significantly contributes to <br /> the cause of, increased morbidity or mortality of <br /> • human beings . Ariy other material which, in the <br /> determination of the facility infection control <br /> staff, presents a significant danger of infection <br /> because it is contaminated with, or may be <br /> reasonably expected to 'be contaminated with, <br /> etiologic agents . At Bio Cal Medical Group <br /> Laboratory, this will include used blood drawing <br /> equipment such as needles, syringes and vials . <br /> B. Storage <br /> 1 . Infectious sharps shall be contained for disposal in <br /> leak proof, rigid, puncture resistant containers <br /> such as cartons or <br /> �r_�quiPed-_with___t - hty_-fit- -ng_lids--te ent--�. <br /> Rigid containers of infectious <br /> , 13 � sharps shall be conspicuously labeled with the words <br /> "Infectious Waste°° or with the international <br /> biohazard symbol and word "Biohazard" . Do not over <br /> fill containers and do not obstruct labeling. Off <br /> site blood collection stations will collect <br /> infectious sharps in the same manner. No more than <br /> a total of 50 lbs . per month of such materials may <br /> be transported by courier to Bio Cal Medical Group <br /> Laboratory. <br /> 2. Other infectious materials will be collected in <br /> containers with tight fitting lids . The container <br /> will be conspicuously labeled with the words <br /> "Infectious Waste" or with the international <br /> biohazard symbol and the word "Biohazard" . Any <br /> plastic bag used to line any container will meet the <br />
