Delta Blood Bank 65 N. Commerce St. Stockton, CA 95202
Administation (v.1.1)
Safety Program: Section 1030 Medical Waste Management Plan Page 1 of 3
1030. Delta Blood Bank's Medical Waste Management Plan
1030.1 This plan outlines the storage, accumulation, and removal of medical waste
generated by Delta Blood Bank- Center of Operations
1. This facility is a blood donor center located at 65 North Commerce Street
Stockton, CA 95202.
2. This facility registered with the required enforcement agency is a large
quantity generator (LQG) and is the central location of accumulation for
Delta's small quantity generator sites.
1 The medical waste consists of biohazardous and sharps wastes.
4. Approximately 4250 lbs of medical waste is generated in one month.
5. The`medical waste does not include paper towels, paper products, and
articles containing non fluid blood'.
6. This facility does not treat medical waste, but contracts with a registered
hazardous waste hauler.
1030.2 This section describes how medical waste is segregated, contained and labeled
at all Delta Blood Bank facilities.
1. Biohazardous waste is disposed into medical waste receptacles (i.e.
facility containers lined with red biohazard bags or registered hazardous
waste hauler containers lined with red biohazard bags).
2. Biohazard bags must be moisture resistant and possess the strength to
prevent ripping, tearing and bursting (i.e. the bag manufacturer can certify
the material is of sufficient single thickness strength to meet an impact
resistance of 165 grams and a tearing resistance of 480 grams2).
3. When full, the biohazard bags are tied to prevent leakage or expulsion of
contents during future storage, handling, or transport.
4. Medical waste receptacles must be:
a. Any color (red is preferred).
b. Rigid, leak -resistant, and have tight -fitting covers.
c. Labeled with the words "Biohazardous Waste" or with the
international biohazard symbol and the word `BIOHAZARD" on the
lid and on the sides so as to be visible from any lateral direction3.
d. Kept clean and in good repair.
i. Since facility biohazardous waste containers are completely
protected from contamination by disposable liners or bags removed
with the waste, washing and decontamination each time they are
emptied is not required.
ii. If containers are not lined or contamination does occur, the
container must be decontaminated using the following steps4:
• Agitation to remove visible soil.
• Rinsing with, or immersion in, hypochlorite solution (1 part
household bleach to 100 parts water or 500 ppm available
chlorine) for a minimum of three minutes.
1030.3 Sharps waste are placed into approved sharps containers immediately after use.
1030medwaste-vl_l QA initial:
March 2015 MD initial:
