Pur ose <br /> This procedure describes the process of managing wastes generated <br /> during the collection, processing, testing, and distribution of blood <br /> products when those wastes may be contaminated with blood or other <br /> potentially infectious materials. <br /> B. Audience <br /> This program applies to staff and management who generate, segregate <br /> and dispose at the point of use, package, label, transport, store, prepare <br /> waste containers for pickup by a licensed waste hauler, complete manifest <br /> documentation, reconcile waste manifest documentation or otherwise <br /> handle any other aspects of regulated medical waste. <br /> 11. DEFINITIONS <br /> Blood For the purpose of this policy, human blood, human blood <br /> components, and products made from human blood. <br /> Contaminated The presence of, or reasonably anticipated presence of, <br /> blood or other potentially infectious materials on an item or <br /> surface. <br /> Sharp Any object that can penetrate the skin including, but not <br /> limited to, needles, scalpels, broken glass <br /> Potentially Infectious The following human body fluids: semen, vaginal secretions, <br /> Materials cerebrospinal fluid, synovial fluid, pleural fluid, amniotic fluid, <br /> saliva in dental procedures, any body fluid that is visibly <br /> contaminated with blood, and all body fluids in situations <br /> where it is difficult or impossible to differentiate between <br /> body fluids; Any unfixed tissue or organ (other than intact <br /> skin) from a human (living or dead); and HIV-containing cell <br /> or tissue cultures, organ cultures, and HIV-or HBV <br /> containing culture medium or other solutions; and blood, <br /> organs, or other tissues from experimental animals infected <br /> with HIV or HBV. <br /> American Red Cross Biomedical Services Safety Page 1 of 17 <br /> Regulated Medical Waste Program Program#023 <br /> 12-/�J(q <br />
