ACCIDENTS <br />1. For skin contaminated by blood and/or blood pro- <br />ducts, wash the area thoroughly with soap and <br />water and apply a topical disinfectant such as <br />alcohol or the -..•. I <br />2. For skin irritated by chemicals: <br />a. Strong acid or alkali: immediately flush <br />with cold water for one minute and then wash. <br />Do not scrub. <br />b. Other: Consult label or MEDS on product. <br />3. For splashes in the eye by blood or chemicals, <br />flush eyes with eye wash continuously for 10 <br />minutes. Avoid rubbing the eyes. <br />4. For a skin laceration from broken glass or sharp <br />metal piece, remove all foreign materials pro- <br />jecting from the wound, clean the cut with soap <br />and water, apply topical disinfectant and apply <br />bandage. If the cut is severe, apply direct <br />pressure on the wound and seek medical attention. <br />5. When skin puncture occurs from a needle or other <br />blood -contaminated sharp object, bleeding should <br />be encouraged. Then wash the area with soap and <br />water. Place clean dry bandage over wound. Fill <br />out "Percutaneous Exposure Report". <br />6. Report all accidents to your supervisor immediate- <br />ly, using form S2. (Be sure to write legibly; be <br />accurate and complete.) Seek medical attention <br />when required. Fill out the Employee Injury Re- <br />port when appropriate. Your supervisor will initi <br />ate corrective action as necessary. <br />Spills and Breakage Protocol <br />1. Use brush and dust pan to clean up broken glass- <br />ware. Do not use bare hands. <br />2. Place broken glass in an infectious waste barrel. <br />3. For spills involving blood or blood products: <br />a. Whenever possible, remove contaminated cloth- <br />ing immediately. <br />b.
