Z <br />C. Use paper towels or cloths to remove the <br />spilled material. Wipe toward the center of <br />the spill. <br />d. If the spill occurred on a non -porous surface <br />and can be removed, remove the spilled mater- <br />ial and then disinfect the surface with 0.05% <br />sodium hypochlorite (1 part bleach + 99 parts <br />water. I <br />e. If the spill occurred on a porous surface <br />if the spilled material cannot be removed <br />from the surface, disinfect the area with <br />0.5% sodium hypochlorite (1 part bleach + <br />9 parts water). Disinfectant must remain <br />contact with the contaminated area for at <br />least 30 minutes. <br />f. Dispose of used towels and gloves as <br />hazardous waste. <br />9. If a tube, bag or bottle containing blood <br />breaks in a centrifuge: <br />(1) Turn off the centrifuge immediately. <br />(2) Allow centrifuge to remain closed for <br />15 minutes to allow small droplets to <br />settle. <br />(3) Put on gloves & open the centrifuge <br />carefully. <br />ER <br />MIP <br />(4) Remove broken glass and spilled material <br />as described above. <br />(5) Disinfect exposed surfaces. <br />Hazardous Chemical Spills <br />1. Whenever possible, remove contaminated clothes <br />immediately. <br />2. If chemicals are flammable, extinguish open flames <br />and turn off all electrical equipment in the <br />immediate area. <br />3. Ventilate the room. Avoid inhaling any vapors <br />that may be toxic fumes. Consult MSDS. <br />4.
