To prevent infection by this means, precautions
must ALWAYS be observed in handling uncapped needles. Other
routes of exposure include infection through the mucosal
membranes or via non -intact skin. Exposure may also occur
in cuts with sharp instruments or broken glass.
Contaminated surfaces on equipment such as centrifuges or
pipetting devices may pose a risk to the health care worker.
Specific infectious agents present in the blood bank
are discussed in the section on Infectious Agents Trans-
mitted by Blood. Definitions of Public Health Service
Biosafety Levels • Risk follow:
1: Work that involves agents of no known or of
minimal potential hazard to personnel and the
environment.
2: Work that involves agents of moderate
potential hazard to personnel and the environ-
ment. Most work with blood requires Biosafety
Level 2 precautions.
3: Work that involves indigenous or exotic agents
that may cause serious or potentially lethal
disease as a result of exposure by inhalation.
To insure that all Delta Blood Bank staff working in
Biosafey Level 2 conditions are aware of the precautions to
be observed herein, orientation, training and continuing
education will be provided. Information to be given to
employees includes the epidemiology, modes of transmission,
and prevention of HIV and other blood borne infections, and
the need for routine use of the Universal Blood Precautions.
BIOSAFETY - INFCONT - 0491 - PAGE 1
