DIRECTOR
FORMULATED: October 1, 1994
APPROVED BY:
REVIEWED: 8/1/95
1 REVISED:
The purpose of this plan is to define the policies, procedures an
protocols involved in our medical waste management. I
Collectively, the procedures and methods used to separate and
handle medical waste are guidelines which cover the special
precautions associated with the handling, storage, collection,
transportation and disposal of medical waste from our healthcare
facility. The guidelines have been developed to minimize the ris
of adverse environmental effects to public health, as well as
occupational and public health risks. I
All regulated medical waste (as defined by the California Health
and Safety Code, California Medical Waste Management Act of 1990
and enforced by the San Joaquin Public Health Services
Environmental Health Division) will be disposed by our facility
under the supervision of Clark Austin CHT, Technical Director.
The medical waste generated by our facility consists of Laboratory
Wastes, Blood or Body Fluids, Sharps, and Isolation Wastes.
A. As a minimum, all regulated medical waste will be collected
within the area of origin and shall be bagged in red plastic
bags of at least 165 gram dart impact -resistant. Bagging is t*
be done in a manner which will reduce the hazard of injury or
disease transmission. Bags will be securely tied so as to
prevent loss of contents.
B. All needles, syringes ' blades, broken glassware contaminated
with other medical waste, including any sharps waste capable of
cutting or piercing, shall be placed into a rigid puncture -
resistant container which, when sealed, is leak resistant and
cannot be easily opened. Sharps container will be labeled
"Sharps Waste" or with the biohazardous symbol and the word
"Biohazard" and stored no more than 7 days when full.
C. The dialysis staff or janitors, who have collected the
regulated medical waste and subsequently bagged it, will the
place the bagged, regulated medical waste into the leak -
resistant, rodent -proof storage container with a tight fitti
lid, which is provided and maintained by our medical waste
disposal contractor, this includes all hauling and offsite
treatment: I
