Prior to handling any medical waste bags, containers or receptacles, appropriate clothing <br />shall be put on. Disposable gloves and aprons shall be maintained in all areas generating <br />medical waste. <br />2. All medical waste shall be placed into red biohazard bags labeled with the words <br />"Biohazardous Waste" or with the international symbol and word "Blohazar&'. These <br />bags must be impervious to moisture and have strength sufficient to preclude ripping, <br />tearing or bursting under normal use and handling. All waste which has been placed into <br />a red bag shall be considered to be niedi.cal waste. The bags shall be double tied to <br />prevent spillage in the event a bag is dumped upside down. Sharps containers shall be <br />labeled with the words `"Sharps Waste" or with the international biohazard symbol and the <br />word "Biohazard". They shall be a rigid puncture resistant container that when sealed is <br />leak resistant not able to be reopened without great difficulty. The small red plastic bags <br />shall be located in each area generating medical waste. <br />Rev. 07/08 <br />3. Pharmaceutical waste containers will be secured in areas that are not accessible to the <br />inmate. Each container must be clearly labeled with the current date (when put into <br />service) and the expiration date. When the waste container becomes 3/4 full; the janitorial <br />services will remove the container frons the medical clinical areas and transport the <br />containers to the OHU. If janitorial services are not available, nursing staff' will remove <br />the % full containers and transport them to the OHU. Replacement containers will <br />immediately be available. <br />C. Transportation of Medical Waste to Disposal Area <br />9"1 <br />1. Biohazardous Waste shall be contained in proper containers located in various medical <br />areas throughout the i4titution. These areas are outlined in the memorandum, dated <br />July 07, 2008 (Attachment A). <br />2. After donning the appropriate protective clothing, the designated staff shall proceed to the <br />Biohazard Waste Stora& area located in the outlined areas. <br />3. Staff assigned to areas generating Biohazard Waste shall tie up the small red bags <br />containing Biohazardous Waste and place the bags into an appropriate Biohazard <br />Disposal Container for pickup by the designated staff. <br />Rcv, 47!08 <br />4. The contract janitorial services will pick up the biohazard waste in various medical areas <br />throughout the institution as outlined in the memorandum dated duly 07, 2008. Biohazard <br />waste containers will be closed and delivered to the disposal shed located adjacent to the <br />Truck Salleyport, if the contract janitorial services is not available, the Search and Escort <br />Officer #3 (S&E 3) will utilize Firebouse inmate workers during second watch on <br />Tuesday and Friday to pick up the Biohazard Waste. <br />5, The Biohazard Material Coordinator, Cynthia Fedrick, Correctional Health Services <br />Administrator I, or designee shall ensure the placement of the Biohazard Disposal <br />Containers in the dispoial shad in a neat and orderly manner. Partially tilled Biohazard <br />Disposal Containers shall be placed in front of full containers. <br />7. All Biohazard Disposal Containers shall be ready for pickup by the Biohazard Waste <br />Contractor on Monday morning prior to 1000 hours. <br />
