St. Joseph's Medical Center <br />Policies and Procedures <br />301.0 MEDICAL WASTE HANDLING, REMOVAL, TRANSPORT AND DISPOSAL <br />301.1 POLICY <br />Medical Waste will be removed and disposed of from St. Joseph's Medical Center <br />in a safe and sanitary manner and in accordance with state, county and JCAHO <br />guidelines and regulations. <br />301.2 PROCEDURE <br />A. Wearing Apparel <br />Gloves and a cover gown or apron must be worn when transporting and <br />disposing of medical waste. <br />B. Removal <br />1. Medical Waste is to be placed in "biohazard" red bags and <br />removed from patient areas, laboratories and operating rooms on a <br />daily basis. <br />2. The bags are to be securely tied and placed in covered containers <br />in the soiled utility room. <br />3. The medical waste bags are to be removed on a daily basis from <br />the soiled utility room and placed in a covered red cart for <br />transport to the steam sterilizer area. Medical waste must not be <br />transported outside or on top of the red cart. The lid to the cart <br />must be closed and remain closed while transporting. <br />4. Follow the procedures outlined in policies 303 and 304 to dispose <br />of the medical waste. <br />5. Clean the medical waste transport carts on a daily basis using a <br />solution of 3M Neutral Quat Disinfectant. <br />6. When leaving the Steam Sterilizer/compactor area lock the gate. <br />This area must remain locked at all times when not attended. <br />7. The medical waste carts should be stored inside the fenced <br />compactor area. <br />
