The medical waste carts are to be used only for the transport of
medical waste. Medical waste and regular waste must not be
transported together in the same container.
C. Sharps Disposal
Full sharps containers will be removed from the patient rooms and
areas by the environmental services staff.
2. Before removing the container the lid must be sealed and secured.
3. The sharps container will be placed in the soiled utility room.
4. Before transporting the sharps container the trash person will
inspect the container to ensure that it is properly sealed and secure.
All sharps containers must be placed in clear plastic bags and
transported as medical waste to the steam sterilizer/compactor
area. (The purpose of putting them in clear bags is to distinguish
them from other medical waste that will be sterilized and then
placed in the compactor).
6. In the Steam sterilizer/compactor area, the sharps containers are to
be placed in the medical waste storage tubs for pick up by a
licensed medical waste hauler. The storage tubs must be covered
with the lids firmly in place.
Revised 7/2007
Reviewed 7/13/2007
Revised 612009
