E <br />St. Joseph's Medical Center <br />Policies and Procedures <br />302.0 CHEMOTHERAPY AND PATHOLOGY WASTE <br />302.1 POLICY <br />To remove, store and dispose of hazardous and pathological waste in a safe and <br />sanitary manner and in accordance with state, county and JCAHO guidelines and <br />regulations. <br />302.2 PROCEDURE <br />A. Wearing Apparel <br />Gloves and a cover gown or apron must be worn when handling, <br />transporting and disposing of hazardous or pathological waste. <br />B. Chemotherapy Waste Removal and Storage <br />Trace chemotherapy waste (waste contaminated by chemotherapy, <br />such as tubing, I.V. bags, gloves, gowns, etc.) is to be placed by <br />nursing in yellow bags labeled "Chemotherapy Waste" and placed <br />in a plastic container, labeled "Chemotherapy Waste", with the lid <br />sealed closed. <br />2. These containers are to be picked up by environmental services <br />staff from the soiled utility room and transported to the Hazardous <br />Waste storage shed located in the fenced steam <br />sterilizer/compactor area. <br />Any unused solution or mixture of chemotherapy must be placed in <br />a yellow bag labeled "Chemotherapy Waste" and placed in a <br />plastic container. The sealed container must be taken to the <br />purchasing storeroom for removal by a licensed hazardous waste <br />hauler. <br />C. Pathology Waste Removal and Storage <br />Pathology waste is to be placed in double red bags by staff from <br />the pathology department. The bags are then to be placed in either <br />treated cardboard containers or rubber containers labeled <br />"Pathology Waste". The containers must be closed and sealed. <br />
