1.0 Introduction
Bloodbome pathogens are disease-producing micro-organisms that maybe present in
human blood and other body fluids. These pathogens include, but are not limited to AIDS
(Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) caused by HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus)
and HBV (Hepatitis B Virus.)
Life Line Screening is committed to providing a safe work environment for our entire staff. In
pursuit of this endeavor, the following Exposure Control Plan (ECP) has been established to
eliminate or minimize occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens in accordance with the
OSHA Bloodbome Pathogens Standard, Title 29 Code of Federal Regulations 1910.1030.
The objectives of this plan are:
■ To protect our employees from the health hazards associated with bloodborne
pathogens.
■ To provide appropriate treatment and counseling should an employee be exposed to
bloodbome pathogens.
2.0 Program Administration
2.1 The Director of Clinical Operations and Laboratory Manager are jointly responsible for
the implementation of the ECP. These duties include:
■ Reviewing, maintaining and updating the written ECP at least annually and
whenever necessary, to include new or modified tasks and procedures.
■ Ensuring that all medical actions required are performed and that appropriate
medical records are maintained.
■ Employee training, documentation of training, and making the written ECP
available to employees, OSHA and NIOSH representatives.
■ Maintaining and providing all necessary personal protective equipment (PPE),
engineering controls, labels, and biohazard containers required by the
standard.
■ Ensuring that adequate supplies of the aforementioned equipment are available
at all Life Line Screening worksites and permanent facilities.
■ Ensuring those employees who are reasonably anticipated to have contact
with, or exposure to, blood or other potentially infected materials comply with
the procedures and work practices outlined in Life Line Screening's Exposure
Control Plan.
2.2 All Employees are responsible for:
■ Complying with Life Line Screening's ECP.
® Identifying hazards and taking proper action to prevent exposure to bloodborne
pathogens.
■ Notifying their Team Manager(field teams) immediately when a potential
exposure to a bloodborne pathogen is identified.
