3.0 Employee Exposure Determination
Life Line Screening has evaluated the work tasks associated with our staff to determine
which tasks could result in exposure to bloodbo a pathogens. Life Line Screening has
adopted the following categorical distinctions to determine the level of potential exposure for
its employees:
3.1 Category 1, Tasks that involve frequent exposure to blood or other body fluids and is
part of the daily job requirement. Category] includes all field team members conducting
blood tests. Affected duties include collecting of blood samples into capillary tubes,
cleaning up of work site upon completion of blood tests and equipment/site
decontamination.
■ Ultrasound Technicians
■ Medical Technicians
3.2 Category It, Tasks that involve some exposure to blood or other body fluids, but is not
part of the daily job requirement. Category II includes the Clinical Operations
department and any manager supervising the field team members in Category I.
Affected duties include field site visits and training.
■ Clinical Operations Dept. — Director, Clinical Managers, Laboratory Manager,
Laboratory Program Coordinator
■ General Managers
■ Director of Operations
4.0 Methods of Implementation Control
4.1 Universal Precautions: Universal precautions will be observed by all Life Line
Screening field employees. This means all blood and other body fluids are assumed
to be infectious regardless of the perceived status of the source individual.
4.2 Exposure Control Plan (ECP): Employees covered by the Bloodborne Pathogens
Standard will receive an explanation of this ECP during their initial training session.
All employees will be notified if there are changes to this ECP. Refresher training will
occur as needed. The ECP is posted on the company intranet for all employees to
access. In addition, each field team will have a copy in their Standard Operating
Procedures manual.
4.3 Work Practice Controls
■ No eating, drinking, smoking, applying cosmetics or lip balm, and handling
contact lenses when blood or other potentially infectious materials (OPIM)
are present.
■ No food or drink shall be kept in areas (such as on table tops) where blood
or OPIM is present.
® All surfaces contaminated with blood will be cleaned with cavicide surface
disinfectant.
