Storage is limited to actually that being used. Several different types of
water treatment (for RO system & boiler) chemicals are also found here. The boiler
room also has a satellite collection point for waste oil.
Batch House Storage Room, East Butler Building
Certain materials are used as glass colorant chemicals. Stored in these locations are
nickel oxide, Iron Oxide, Selenium, Soda Ash, Silica Sand, cobalt oxide, sodium
nitrate, Sodium Sulfate, Titanium Dioxide, Limestone, Dolomite, and a cobalt oxide
containing mixture (material 98). When melted into the glass product, their hazardous
properties are no longer manifest. The materials are purchased as dry powders in
paper bags or fiber drums.
Hazardous Material Bulk Storage
Sulfur Dioxide
A sulfur dioxide dispensing port is located outside on the north side of the lehr. Two
500 Ib cylinders are located here, one for dispensing and one on standby. There is a
third two 500 Ib cylinder located about 50 feet away as a back up (not connected).
Chlorine
Cylinders are located at each of the cooling towers and at the sanitary packaged
treatment plant. One to two 150 Ib. cylinders are usually found at the cooling tower
south of the boiler room and east of the furnace. Two 150 Ib. cylinders serve the
packaged sanitary treatment plant. Chlorine gas is used continuously to disinfect the
effluent from the treatment plant and at the cooling towers.
Propane Gas
Propane gas is used as fuel in forklifts and as standby fuel for the furnace. The main
propane tank farm (standby fuel) consists of four 40,000 gallon tanks and one 30,000
gallon tank located to the rear of the facility. In addition to these, a 1,000 gallon tank is
located in the same area and used to fuel equipment.
H:\profile\My Documents\500 E.
