As you know, the site contains three wells
that are monitored quarterly for VOCs to comply with San Joaquin County Environmental
Health Department Notice and Order 04-01. At the request of the Regional Water Board
groundwater samples from the most recent monitoring event were analyzed for dissolved
metals and general minerals.
Results of the metals and general minerals sampling indicate that the World Enterprises
landfill is polluting the underlying groundwater. Significant analytical results are summarized
as follows:
Constituent Water Quality Background MW-1 MW-2
Goal MW-3 Leachate
(ppb) (ppb) (ppb) (ppb)
TDS 4_50,000_ 960,000 1,730,000 2,220,000
Aluminum 50 <200 --- 277 <900 --
Arsenic 2.1 3.26 35.8 3.81
Barium _ 490 _ 180 _ 763 1770
Iron 300 <200 3,620 10,700 _
Lead _ 2 — 2.34 -- _9.87 4.5
Manganese 50 5.99 7000 2410
Nickel 12 0.635 15.5 5.74
Leachate in the waste sampled at MW-2 and groundwater downgradient of the closed landfill
contain significantly greater concentrations of TDS, arsenic, barium, iron, lead, manganese,
and nickel then concentrations of those same constituents at upgradient well MW-3. Also
most of these constituents in the downgradient well exceed Water Quality Goals. These
results show that closed World Enterprise Landfill has impacted groundwater quality.
CaliJurnia Environmental Protection Agency
J, Recycled Paper
