1.5 STATUS AND SUPPLY OF SOIL COVER
The soil located within the boundary of the landfill consists
of a fairly complete stratigraphic sequence of Cretaceous,
Tertiary and Quaternary deposits.
Geotechnical investigations performed at the Austin Road
Landfill site have revealed the presence of an upper stratum
of black to dark brown, highly plastic fat clays underlain by
low plastic sandy clays to depths ranging from 8 to 12 feet
below surface grade.
The Austin Road Landfill site is characterized by rather flat
topography, with less that six feet of fall from east to west
over the 5000 foot dimension.
Since commencing operation in 1957, the Austin Road Landfill
has utilized on-site soil for daily and intermediate covers.
Tentative expansion plan for this landfill requires three feet
of soil cover over the existing 135 acre refuse filled area in
addition to four feet of final cover.
Due to this projected deficiency of on-site soil available for
cover, the development and use of alternative sources of cover
is being pursued.
1.6 PROTECTION AGAINST DUST, ODOR, AND LEACHATE GENERATION
DUST
The use of alternative cover will reduce problems with dust
pollution, odors, and leachate generation. Less dust will
formed by the use of the greenwaste alternative cover material
because less native soil will be disturbed. Dust is currently
controlled by use of a water truck which will continue to
operate but will not be used over the active face on days when
greenwaste cover is applied.
ODOR
Odors may not be controlled as effectively with the greenwaste
cover as with the soil cover. The alternative cover will
minimize the odor problems and with the soil cover on Fridays
of each week will eliminate odor complaints. Odor is not
expected to be a problem at the Austin Road Landfill because
of the remote location.
6
