Austin Road Landfill Appendix B <br /> Contaminant Plume Characterization Report Field Procedures <br /> ■ Sampling items were rinsed thoroughly with tap water,checked for any residual <br /> dirt,and rewashed if necessary. <br /> ■ The item was rinsed with solvent to remove residual organics. - <br /> ■ The item was rinsed twice with tap water. <br /> ■ The item was be rinsed with deionized water(ASTM Type I ). <br /> ■ The item was completely air dried prior to use. Items were covered if not used <br /> immediately. Large items were placed on a clean sheet of plastic. <br /> ■ Items not used immediately were either wrapped in aluminum foil(small items) or <br /> in sheet plastic(large items) to prevent cross-contamination. <br /> B.3 Sample Documentation <br /> The on-site geologist maintained a field logbook documenting the following: day,date,time <br /> entered site,temperature,weather conditions,names,and titles of personnel present;names and <br /> titles of any visitors on site;arrival time of driller and other subcontractors,feet drilled,materials <br /> used,reference to boring logs,decontamination iterations;any potential problem areas or incidents <br /> and how those impacted the project;and any telephone calls made and how they affected the <br /> decision-making process. <br /> A detailed base map was used in the field during drilling and sampling operations. <br /> B.4 Sample Custody <br /> Sample custody included the classification,packaging,transportation,identification,labeling,and <br /> handling of all samples collected in the field. <br /> i <br /> B.4.1 Sample Classification <br /> Sample classification is necessary to ensure the protection of personnel involved in the shipment of <br /> samples,and to maintain the integrity of the samples. The packaging,labeling,and shipping of ' <br /> hazardous wastes and substances is regulated by the U.S.Department of Transportation(DOT) - <br /> under 49 CFR 171-173. Samples obtained at the landfill are classified as environmental samples. <br /> B.4.2 Sample Packaging and Transportation ! <br /> All samples collected during this investigation were packaged according to standard EPA f <br /> guidelines. Groundwater samples were secured in DOT-approved ice chests,chilled to VC,and <br /> shipped the same day as collection via courier to APPL,Inc. (fixed-base analytical laboratory)in <br /> Fresno,California.
