Austin Road Landfill Appendix B
Contaminant Plume Characterization Report Field Procedures
bags and placed in the ice chests. All ice chests were sealed with strapping tape and chain-of-
custody seals.
Groundwater samples for volatile organic compound(VOC)analyses were collected in three 40-ml
glass vials with Teflon-lined silicon septa and black phenolic caps. Each sample vial was preserved
with two drops 1:1 HCL
Soil samples for TOC grain size and surface area analyses were collected in ziplock bags. These
samples were placed into ice chests, chilled to 4°C,and shipped via courier to APPL.
B.4.3 Sample Identification
A coding system was used that is designed to uniquely identify a sample and to allow tracking and
retrieval of specific information concerning the sample. The coding system used for the soil borings
in this study is as follows:
■ The first three letters represent the site investigation identification code, established
as ARL(Austin Road Landfill)and will be followed by a hyphen.
■ The next alphanumeric set indicates the boring location:l followed by A,B,or C for
the borings in the first transect area;2 followed by A for the borings in the second
transect area;and 3 followed by A or B for the borings in the third transect. This
alphanumeric set is also be followed by a hyphen.
■ The next two letters followed by a hyphen represents the media type if the media
was groundwater(GW). The lack of these letters indicates that the sample media was
soil.
■ Finally,a two-to three-digit code will be used to establish the sample depth in feet.
For example,the code ARL-1A-GW80 would indicate a groundwater sample(GW)collected from a
depth of 80 feet from the initial boring of the first transect during the plume study at the Austin
Road Landfill(ARL). In some cases(ARL-3B and ARL-4A),the letters GW were not inserted into
the groundwater sample names. This has been changed in the tables and figures in this report to
reflect the coding system as describe above, but remains as initially documented in the log book and
analytical reports.
B.4.4 Sample Labeling
Sample labels contained an abbreviated summary of the information contained in the field log book.
Sample label information was written with waterproof, indelible ink. Sample labels contained the
following information:
■ job name and number
■ Sampling site
CS 010812
CDM Camp Dresser&McKee city of Stockton 190855-00% B-5
W:IREPORTMTOCKTON A.RLKUME.WWPXMWPO
