Foothill Sanitary Landfill—Module 1 December 2003
County of San Joaquin Job No.031602.00.02
4.0 EARTHWORKS CONSTRUCTION
During the installation, earthworks construction was performed on several components
of the system. As this construction was implemented, Vector performed CQA
monitoring. The elements discussed within this section have been organized as
describe in the following:
• Section 4.1: Clearing and Grubbing
• Section 4.2 Foundation layer preparation
• Section 4.3: Sideslope subgrade preparation
• Section 4.4: LCRS drainage layer
• Section 4.5: Operations layer
• Section 4.6: Surveying
4.9 Clearing and Grubbing
Since the majority of the excavation and fill was completed prior to Vector arriving on-
site, only minor clearing and grubbing was required within Module 1 for removal of all
deleterious materials such as grass, roots, or other organic vegetative materials.
Vector's CQA Monitor observed the clearing and grubbing activities to ensure proper
removal of any vegetation. Vector's CQA Monitors ensured that all clearing and
grubbing activities were completed prior to preparation of the foundation layer and the
Sideslope subgrade.
4.2 Foundation Layer Preparation
The foundation layer for Module 1 consisted of a one-foot soil layer at the floor of the
module compacted to 90% relative density in two lifts per WDR Construction
Specifications 2(b).
The foundation of Module 1 was scarified to a minimum depth of 12-inches by the
ripper blades of the motor grader. During the scarification, Vector's CQA Monitor
observed that the 12-inch minimum depth of scarification was adhered to by the
Contractor. Upon completion of the scarification, the top 6-inches of soil were
windrowed off to the side and the remaining material was moisture conditioned and
Vector Engineering,Inc.• 143E Spring Hill Drive•Grass Valley,CA 95945•(530)272-2448
8
