Foothill Sanitary Landfill—Module 1 December 2003
County of San Joaquin Job No.031602.00.02
compacted in place with a CAT 815 sheepsfoot compactor. After compaction of the
bottom 6-inches, the windrowed material was then placed back on top of the
compacted areas, moisture conditioned (with a water truck and a motor grader), and
compacted (also with a CAT 815 sheepsfoot compactor).
The foundation layer was then tested for density and moisture content with a nuclear
density gauge. In addition, sandcone tests (ASTM D-1556) were also performed as
discussed in the ensuing density verification section. Samples for sieve analysis were
collected to verify that the gradation requirements were met.
During placement of the foundation layer, Vector's CQA Monitor obtained samples of
the material and performed Atterberg limits and sieve analyses (including a sieve wash)
to ensure the material met the project specifications. The material on the base of
Module 1 met the project specifications for particle size with the exception of
approximately 10 acres. The material in these areas were a sandy material that did not
have more than 30% fines, as required. The material in these areas were over
excavated, removed, and replaced with on-site material that did meet the project
specifications for percent fines. The areas of foundation layer that were removed and
replaced with suitable material are identified on Figure 1.
After the foundation layer was recompacted, field density tests were conducted with a
nuclear density gauge to ensure 90% relative compaction. The moisture content or the
foundation layer was determined by the oven drying method (ASTM D2216) to ensure a
moisture content of 0 to 4% wet of optimum moisture content. The dry density obtained
by the nuclear gauge was modified based on the oven dry moisture content. This
modified value for the dry density was utilized in determining pass or fail for
compaction. Test and sample locations for the foundation layer soils are shown in
Figures 2, 3 and 4.
Vector Engineering,Inc.• 143E Spring Hill Drive•Grass Valley,CA 95945•(530)272-2448
9
