The installation and
associated CQA provided for each of these components are discussed within the
following sections.
5.2 Geosynthetic Clay Liner (GCL)
The GCL used in the construction of Module 1 was manufactured by GSE. The type of
GCL material utilized was Bentofix NWL35. Bentofix NWL35 consists of granular
bentonite encapsulated by two non -woven geotextiles.
5.2.1 GCL Manufacture and Delivery
5.2.1.1 Receiving Inspection
Upon arrival by truck shipment, Vector's CQA Monitor conducted the receiving
inspection that include labeling, transportation and handling, storage, and inventory as
discuss in the following.
The unloading and storage of the GCL rolls were observed by Vector's CQA Monitors.
Each roll of GCL was logged in by roll number. Information regarding the roll number,
lot, batch, laboratory testing log, and pass/fail of the sheet was recorded. A copy of the
log of GCL received and the manufacturer's data have been included in Appendix I.
5.2.1.2 GCL Quality Assurance Conformance Testing
Samples of the GCL were cut from random rolls for conformance testing by the third
party testing laboratory at the manufacturing plant in accordance with the CQA manual
and project specifications. Conformance testing included the following:
• bentonite mass per unit area (ASTM D-5993)
• bentonite moisture content (ASTM D-4643)
• index flux (ASTM D-5887)
Vector Engineering, Inc. - 143E Spring Hill Drive - Grass Valley, CA 95945 - (530) 272-2448
21
