Foothill Sanitary Landfill — Module 1 December 2003
County of San Joaquin Job No 031602 00 02
® grab tensile strength (ASTM -4632)
® interface shear strength (GCL/ 60 mil geomembrane and internal shear)
Twenty (20) GCL samples were tested for conformance. Based on 1,670,000 ft2 of
GCL received, this testing frequency corresponds to one test per 83,500 ft2, which
satisfies the specified requirement of one test per 100,000 square feet (sf). Per the
specifications, the frequency of index flux testing was a minimum of 1 test. One (1)
GCL sample was tested for index flux. Results of the conformance testing indicated
that the materials met the requirements of the project specifications.
Interface shear testing was conducted for both the base liner components (foundation
layer/GCL/geomembrane) and the sideslope liner components
(GCL/geomembrane/geocomposite). Initial testing of the interface shear strength was
conducted on Bentofix NWL material. The results of this testing indicated that the
material did not meet the project specifications. Further testing was conducted on the
Bentofix NWL material on different samples based on the manufacturer's peel strength
results. Testing was conducted on material that represented 20, 22, 24 and 26 pound
peel strength. Test results for shear strength on these samples did not meet the
project specifications. It was then determined that the Bentofix NWL35 material would
be required in order to meet the project specifications for shear strength. Bentorfix
NWL35 material has a minimum peel strength of 35 pounds. Samples of the Bentofix
NWL35 material were tested and results indicated that this material met the project
specifications. Based on the interface shear strength testing, only material with a peel
strength greater than 35 pounds was deployed in Module 1. A summary of the
conformance test results are shown in Tables 3 and 4. Detailed test results are
provided within Appendix I.
Vector Engineering, Inc. • 143E Spring Hill Drive • Grass Valley, CA 95945 • (530) 272-2448
22
