3 WASTE CLASSIFICATION AND MANAGEMENT 3.1. WASTE TYPES The Foothill Sanitary Landfill is permitted as a Class III landfill and accepts mixed municipal solid wastes, including agricultural, residential, commercial and industrial wastes, construction and demolition debris, small pickup loads of soil or gravel, yard waste, tires, small dead animals, wood waste, and white goods such as refrigerators, freezers, and air conditioning units. Tires are set aside for recycling. Septic tank wastes, toxic materials, large dead animals, five gallon or larger drums, infectious wastes, liquid wastes, cannery wastes, hazardous wastes, large loads of soil or gravel, trailers, and burned wastes are not accepted. Disposal of dewatered sludge is proposed as a future activity in Module 1. Electronic wastes are accepted and managed in accordance with current state law. Television sets and computer monitors removed from the waste stream for recycling. Section 7.6 addresses management of electronic waste. 3.2. WASTE QUANTITIES The Foothill Sanitary Landfill is currently permitted to receive a maximum of 1,500 tons per day, 7 days per week. In 2004, the amount of refuse disposed was approximately 284,257 tons (approximately 790 tons average per operating day, assuming 7 days per week in 360 days per year operation). The peak daily waste tonnage for 2004 was 1,029 tons. The County estimates that incoming waste will increase approximately 3% per year. The 2004-2005 waste disposal summary at the Foothill Sanitary Landfill is shown in Table 1. The waste projection is shown on Plate 4. The waste disposal information was summarized from the Quarterly Summary of Waste Disposal prepared by San Joaquin County for each quarter of 2004 and 2005 through June.
