Two primary options exist for the recycling of this material. The first, glass to lead recycling
uses the leaded glass cullet as a fluxing agent in the lead smelting process. The second, glass to
glass recycling, involves smelting the glass and reusing it in new CRT devices. This is generally
considered the most environmentally responsible recycling method by industry professionals,
and will be the utilized by Onsite Electronics Recycling for San Joaquin County electronics.
The following two California recyclers may be utilized for managing the recycling of the CRT
glass. These recyclers have both been responsibly managing electronics glass for several years
outside of California and are just establishing recycling facilities in California.
Envirocycle Nxtcycle
Location to be determined 15141 S.Figueroa Street
Los Angeles, CA 90248
Tel: (310)323-9709 or(888)440-9804
Fax: (310) 323-9974
www.nxteycle.com
Metals — The primary metals (other than those found on circuit boards) are the metal casing,
copper wire, and copper yolk. Metal recycling is predominant in the United States and many
local recyclers exist. Both ferrous and non-ferrous metals including steel, aluminum and coppr
will be sorted and sent to smelting plants of substitute for materials used in smelting. The
following is the metal recyclers which may be utilized for recycling these metal commodities:
Universal Services Recycling Sims Metal
3200 S. El Dorado Street 1000 S. Aurora St.
Stockton, CA Stockton, CA 95206
(209) 944-9555 (209)948-4000
Circuit Boards — Circuit boards contained in electronic devices contain many precious metals
including copper, lead, gold, silver, platinum and palladium which can be recovered. Circuit
boards will be sent to a recycling facility, where they will be shredded and metals separated for
smelting operations. The following facility is being proposed for circuit board recycling;
ECS Refining
705 Reed Street
Santa Clara, CA 95050
(409)988-4386
Plastic
A variety of types of plastic are found in scrap electronics, making recycling a challenge.
Studies indicate that 8 — 16 different types of plastic are typically found in consumer electronics.
The recycling market for these plastics is evolving rapidly as electronics recycling becomes more
predominant. Technology in the United States generally centers on recycling these plastics in to
lumber, outdoor furniture and roadbed material. The presence of fire retardants makes these uses
a viable end product. Onsite Electronics Recycling is currently researching the most
nvironmentally sound options for plastics recycling
San Joaquin County Proposal Page 15 of 22
