2.1.3 INCOMING MATERIALS STORAGE
The operating procedure is to remove residual waste as it is received. However, any waste
material that is collected outside of the facility's operating hours is stored on the Transfer Station
floor until it can be loaded into transfer truck trailers for shipment to the landfill the following
work day. Based on the peak inflow rate of 1,320 tpd, and a bulk density of refuse on the tip floor
of 350 pounds/cubic yard, 8,500 cubic yards of storage capacity is needed for each working day.
The storage area within the transfer building is 55,575 square feet and able to accommodate 350
pounds per cubic yard or 8,800 CY of waste at the maximum inflow rate. This storage capacity is
also sufficient to handle periods during the operating day when the rate of incoming tons per hour
exceeds the rate of outgoing tons per hour including activities associated with sorting, processing,
and removal of wastes and/or recyclables. Incoming waste is not stored at the facility for longer
than 48 hours.
2.1.4 LOADING OUTGOING TRANSFER VEHICLES
Transfer trucks enter the site and proceed to the ramp at the rear of the transfer building. The
truck/transfer trailers go down the ramp which leads into the loading chute located at the back of
the transfer building floor (See Figure 4). The transfer trucks are loaded with municipal solid
waste through the openings in the floor (or pit) of the transfer building. Waste is distributed
within the trailer according to gross weight limitations. Weighing is performed on a platform
scale at the bottom of the transfer pit. Once the trailer is loaded it,pulls out of the tunnel and exits
the facility via the gate (See Figure 2).
2.2 HOURS OF OPERATION
Facility operating hours are summarized on Table 1.
Table 1
Lovelace Material Recovery Facility and Transfer Station
Operating Hours
FACILITY OPERATING DAYS OPERATING HOURS
Transfer Station Monday—Friday 7:00 a.m. —5:00 p.m.
Saturday/Sunday 7:00 a.m. —5:00 p.m.
MRF Monday—Friday 7:00 a.m. —5:00 p.m.
Sat urday/Sunday 7:00 a.m. —5:00 p.m.
Public Drop-Off and Monday-Friday 7:00 a.m.—5:00 p.m.
Administration
Saturda 7:00 a.m. —5:00 p.m.
Gates Monday—Friday 7:00 a.m. —5:00 p.m.
Saturday- Sunday 7:00 a.m. —5:00 p.m.
Lovelace MRF and Transfer Station Department of Public Works/Solid Waste Division
Transfer Processing Report 10 County of San Joaquin-Revised 7/26/05
