SAMPLE PRESERVATION AND HANDLING Samples are preserved for analysis by following specific preservation and handling procedures which vary depending on the container type. Sample Containers and Preservation Sample containers vary with each type of analytical parameter. Container types and materials are selected to be nonreactive with the particular analytical parameter tested. Specific preservation requirements are required for different container types(Table A-1). Sample Handling Sample containers are labeled immediately following collection. Samples are kept cool with cold packs until received by the laboratory. Cold packs are replaced each day to maintain refrigeration. At the time of sampling, each sample is logged on a sampling and analysis chain-of-custody record(see Figure A-3)that accompanies the sample to the laboratory. Within 24 hours after samples are received, samples are routinely shipped from EMCON to CAS. The CAS laboratory manager checks the holding times for requested analyses so that they are not exceeded. SAMPLE DOCUMENTATION Sample documentation is used to provide chain-of-custody control during sample handling from collection through storage and includes the use of the following: • Field logbook to document sampling activities in the field • Labels identifying individual samples • Chain-of-custody record sheets for documenting possession and transfer of samples ® Laboratory analysis request sheets for documenting analyses to be performed Groundwater Monitoring A-5 Department of Public Works/Solid Waste County of San Joaquin
