DER
Bright Bright People.Bight Solutions.
2 MONITORING ACTIVITIES
The ET test pad area was monitored from July 2009 to June 2010.
2.1 Rainfall Monitoring
Rainfall data collected at the Test Pad during the July 1, 2009/June 30, 2010 (water
year) is summarized in Table 1. The data are available on a CD in Appendix A. Rainfall
data is collected using a tipping bucket rain gauge located at the test pad (west station).
Rainfall data is measured in inches of rain and then converted to cubic feet water within
the known volume of the test pad. The data is collected and analyzed each month
during the rainy season (October through June).
2.2 Run-off Monitoring
Run-off is measured from precipitation falling on the test pad enclosure. Whatever
amount of precipitation that does not seep into the ground surface soil travels along the
test pad ground surface, collects at a central drain point and is conveyed to the
collection station located outside of the test pad area (Plate 4). Run-off from the Test
Pad has been historically measured using a dosing siphon with a cycle counter. The
dosing siphon typically records 10 gallon increments, and in our estimate may be
susceptible to error due to flow rates, debris accumulated in the pipe, and evaporation
from the primary sedimentation tank between precipitation events. A flow totalizer was
installed in line and upstream of the dosing siphon at the beginning in February 2010 in
an attempt to capture true run-off data and decrease the opportunities for lost data. The
new totalizer is capable of recording 1/10 gallon increments at flows as low as 1/10
gpm. The new totalizer is being used in conjunction with the dosing siphon for quality
assurance. Run-off measured was 153 gallons (20.4 cubic feet). The data are
available in electronic form in Appendix A.
As reported by the County, it should be noted that the sedimentation tank was damaged
during the summer months (likely June) by the grazing sheep brought onto the site to
control weed growth. Kleinfelder assessed the damage on July 8, 2010 and determined
47717.11/ST010R310 Page 3 of 8 August 31, 2010
Copyright 2009 Kleinfelder
