As-Built CQA Report for the Construction of Area 2A at the Foothill Sanitary Landfill
San Joaquin County,California
compaction was based on ASTM D1557. Field density tests using a nuclear gauge (ASTM D6938)
were taken at a frequency of one test for every 1,500 cubic yards, and sand cone (ASTM D1556)
tests were taken at a frequency of one test per 4 nuclear density tests. When field density tests
showed failing results, the area represented by the failed test was either reworked and
recompacted or the failing materials were removed and replaced with properly compacted fill.
A summary of CQA test results for earthfill is presented in Table 1. Laboratory test data sheets are
included in Appendix E.1. The approximate test locations are shown in Figure 5.
The results of field density tests for earthfill,as summarized in Table 1,indicate the following:
■ The in-place dry density of the compacted earthfill materials (passing tests) had an
average dry density of 95.8 pounds per cubic feet (pcf). The relative compaction ranged
from 90 to 100 percent with an average of 93.9 percent. The required minimum relative
compaction was 90 percent based on ASTM D1557.
■ The in-place dry density of the compacted earthfill in the upper 2.5 feet of the roadway
section had an average dry density of 106.4 pounds per cubic feet (pcf). The relative
compaction ranged from 95 to 100 percent with an average of 97.9 percent. The required
minimum relative compaction was 95 percent based on ASTM D1557.
• ■ The in-place moisture content of earthfill materials ranged between -1.8 and +4.2 percent
with an average of+1.7 percent of optimum based on ASTM D1557.
PA14 Projects114-101(SJCDPW North County and Foothill)IFoothill CQA1Report\Final ReportToothill CQA Rport-Final.docx
10
