will be larger, requiring more gravel to be placed in the annulus of the bore. Sludge drilling is
the same as any other drilling if progress is not made in the first hour consult the general notes or
contract for further instruction.
Setting Well Grate
Once the well has been drilled to total depth, place the well safety grate over the well bore. The
grate should be placed over the borehole using a piece of heavy equipment, GRATES SHOULD
NOT BE PLACED OVER THE BOREHOLE MANUALY. Once the grate is in place, tap it
with drilling bucket to make sure safety grate won't slide. This will insure that the hole is
covered before the drill rig leaves the area. The safety grate should extend over the bore hole on
all sides by six inches. If the borehole sloughs off and the grate does not extend by six inches the
grate will need to have long boards put underneath it so that the boards extend 2' on all sides of
grate. If sloughing occurs the grate should be tied off with a strap to the middle of the rig until
the fill is within four feet of the top of the bore hole.
Drilling Completion
If setting PVC pipe, use the sand line on the rig to set PVC pipe. If setting HDPE pipe, a lifting
strap will be attached to a piece of equipment and to the well pipe about half way up the well
pipe. Once the strap is five feet from the safety
grate a clamp will be put in place. The well pipe
W 50 Feet ASSURED
tS
will be lowered onto the safety grate, resting on w U r c
the clamp. The lifting strap can be removed, oc Z CLEAR DISTANCE M m
then placed approximately four feet from the end 0) 1-- ;a r°
of the pipe. This will allow a clamp to be placed d ® ®mom f
ra
v ]v
at five feet from the end of the pipe which is the Q
normal well stickup. The driller before lowering L- wJ 50 Feet ASSURED 0 m
the mast must spin the drill rig 360 degrees to V CLEAR DISTANCE m
make sure that ASSURED CLEAR DISTANCE
is available. The driller will then lower the mast
and pull away from the well bore. The swivel, rotary, and the bearing on the kelly bars should be
greased after every hole drilled. The rest of the machine should be greased daily.
WELL COMPLETION
Inventory
The first thing that should be done by the completion man is inventory. The completion man
should get the quantity list from the driller as to how much material should be on site. If the
materials list does not match, then the completion man should immediately let the driller know.
Then the driller should get with the responsible parties to resolve the discrepancy.
Site Activities
The completion man should have the well schedule and well detail (given to him by the driller).
The well schedule will tell him how much solid pipe, perforated, or slotted pipe will go in the
well. The well detail will tell him how the well is to be completed. The completion man is to
have the pipe put together before the driller has reached the total depth of the well. The
completion man should work with the driller's helper to delegate duties. When the driller has
reached the total depth of the well the completion man should have the well pipe, bentonite, and
