0 <br />ENV/RONMENTAL <br />TECHNOLOG/ES <br />Both DOHS and EPA approved the Closure Plan for this unit on September 23, 1988, and also <br />approved modifications to this Closure Plan on May 23, 1989. WMU A is now closed, and is <br />operating under a hazardous waste facility post -closure permit, issued by the EPA and DOHS, <br />effective January 2, ##0This unit is indicated in Attachment E. <br />WMU B - This is a Class III landfill,covering <br />containsWMU B # no hazardous solid waste, and is undergoingclosure. <br />WMU C - This is a Class M landfill, covering three acres in the southern end of Trench 4 of <br />compacted 1. diker. • `. lf ofTrench from the <br />t,. <br />hazardous solid wastes" and "inert waste" placed in the southern half. <br />WMU D - This consists of several Class III WMUs and future Class II WMUs for "non- <br />hazardous solid waste" and 'inert waste." The WMU D-89 site will eventually be extended to <br />a final size of approximately 65 acres and 5.4 million cubic yards. Details of WMU D are <br />presented <br />coversWMU D-87 was constructed in 1987 and covers 2.5 acres. This unit, as shown in Attachment <br />• portions of and WMU C. It is now# • • <br />WMU D-88 was constructed in 1988, has a 4 -foot thick compacted soil liner, and extends for <br />4.2 acres. WMU D-88 is divided by an internal earthen dike to isolate the southern 1.2 acres <br />(WMU D-88 South) from landfill leachate generated in the northern portion of the WMU (WMU <br />D-88 North). This allows for wastes contaminated with acid -soluble inorganics to be isolated <br />fromacidiclandfill <br />WMU D-89 was constructed in 1989 and has a 4 -foot thick compacted clay floor liner and a <br />10 -foot thick compacted clay sidewall liner. It was constructed to meet the Class II landfill <br />requirements of Subchapter 15. This WMU covers four acres. <br />WMU - This is a Class H landfill, covering 3.7 acres. It was constructed to meet Title 23, <br />ChapterSubchapter 15 :# dedicated tothedisposal t. <br />designf ash such as <br />coal and wood ash, and may be expanded to about 13 acres, as shown in Attachment C. The <br />entire unit has a #. of 1 111 cubic yards.•, pit has . capacity <br />of 260,000 cubic yards.pits will be constructed once the first pit is filled. <br />Mproposed 11 impoundment,•approximately 5 acres. <br />WMU F will hold leachate and other designated wastes compatible with the liner. A <br />temporary/interim WMU F was constructed west of WMU E in 1988 to accommodate landfill <br />leachate only. This impoundment will be closed when the permanent WMU F is built. <br />WMU 9 - This is a Class H land treatment unit which may be sited within the WMU D or <br />WMU H areas prior to landfilling (see Attachment D). Soils contaminated with less than <br />hazardous levels of petroleum hydrocarbons will be stored and treated at WMU G.
