GeoSyntec Consultants
4.5.1 Final Cover Maintenance
The integrity of the final cover will be maintained by repairing the effects of
settlement, subsidence, erosion, or damage to the vegetative layer. Areas that show
evidence of damage will be investigated to ascertain the cause of the damage before
repairs are undertaken. If the damaged areas have caused ponding of surface runoff,
soil will be added as needed and regraded until positive draining slopes are
re-established. If the repaired area is large enough, it will be remulched and
revegetated. Inspections of the final cover will be performed on a quarterly basis.
Vegetative cover destroyed by erosion will be remulched and reseeded following
any regrading. If degradation of the vegetative cover is observed in any area, that area
will be investigated to determine the cause of the degradation. Measures will be taken,
as practicable, to correct any condition found to be causing vegetative degradation. The
vegetative growth will be watered through natural rainfall.
4.5.2 Drainage System Maintenance
The surface drainage control structures will be maintained by keeping drainage
ditches clear of debris and excessive vegetation and by making repairs, as necessary, to
correct the effects of physical damage, erosion, settlement, or other events detrimental
to operation of the drainage control system. Corrective measures will be implemented
if inspections reveal excessive erosion or damage to the drainage channels, or if
settlement causes ponding of runoff on the final cover. Eroded areas will require
removal of the affected loose material, followed by replacement and regrading of the
area to match the adjacent surface contours. If ponding is observed in a channel over
the final cover, the channel will be regraded to permit proper drainage of runoff.
Inspections and maintenance of the drainage system will be carried out quarterly and
after large precipitation events.
4.5.3 Leachate Control System Maintenance
The leachate riser pipes for WMUs D-87, D -88-S, and D -88-N are located within
the closure area for WMU B. The pipes will be inspected, maintained, and repaired as
necessary during the post -closure period. The maintenance program will include
quarterly inspections of the leachate collection pumps and leachate evaporation ponds
and annual inspections of the riser pipes. The riser pipes will be cleaned, if necessary.
J:\ALLIED\FORWARD\CLOSUREPLAN\REPORT 4-3 99.11.30
10
