Gabion baskets shall consist of a uniform wire mesh woven in a triple twist pattern, fabricated as <br /> to be non-raveling. Gabions shall be supplied in various lengths and heights. The lengths shall <br /> be multiples (2, 3, 4) of the horizontal width. The horizontal width shall be not less than 900 mm <br /> (36 inches). Gabion dimensions are subject to a tolerance limit of+ 5% of the stated sizes. The <br /> baskets shall be fabricated at the jobsite. Gabions shall be fabricated so that the sides, ends, lids, <br /> and diaphragms can be assembled into rectangular baskets of the sizes specified and as shown on <br /> the drawings. <br /> 2.3.2 Tie and Lacing Wire <br /> Tie and lacing wire shall be 2.2 mm (13-1/2-gauge), with a minimum zinc coating of 220 g/m2 <br /> (0.65 OZ/ft). <br /> 2.3.3 Hooking Rings <br /> Hooking Rings (Hog Rings) shall be 3.0 mm (11-gauge), stainless steel or galvanized (minimum <br /> weight of zinc coating shall be 240 g/m2 (0.80 OZ/ft). <br /> 2.3.4 Gabion Rock <br /> In accordance with Section 72 of the Standard Specifications for stone riprap, the rock for <br /> gabions shall be hard, durable, and free from cracks and other structural defects that would cause <br /> it to deteriorate. It shall not contain any soapstone, shale, or other material that easily <br /> disintegrates. <br /> The riprap shall consist of durable particles of crushed stone free of silt, clay, or other unsuitable <br /> materials and have a percentage of wear of not more than 40 percent when tested in accordance <br /> with ASTM C131 or C535. <br /> When material is subjected to 5 cycles of the sodium sulfate soundness test in accordance with <br /> ASTM C88, Sodium Sulfate Solution, the weighted percentage of loss shall not exceed 12 <br /> percent. The source of the material shall be approved by the Engineer. <br /> The material used for gabion fill shall be hard stone of a class with pieces ranging from 4 to 8 <br /> inches in the greatest dimension. More than 50 percent of the stone shall be in the 5- to 6-inch <br /> range and cubical or round in shape. A tolerance of 5 percent shall be allowed on the upper and <br /> lower dimensions of the rock. <br /> 2.3.5 Geotextile <br /> Geotextile to be installed under the gabion structure system shall be 12-ounce and shall conform <br /> to the minimum requirements of Section 02771 —Geotextiles of these Specifications and Table <br /> 2.3 below. <br /> FORWARD LANDFILL 02645 <br /> 3 MISCELLANEOUS CIVIL IMPROVEMENTS <br />
