The Work Plan complies with staff's request for a plan to prevent infiltration and protect the foot of
the landfill from overflow from Littlejohns Creek by 15 May 2005.
2. The Work Plan proposes to install a French Drain at the foot of the landfill slope to collect future
leachate releases. The French Drain will consists of a geonet blanket on the side slope, leading to a
gravel drain at the toe of the slope. The French Drain will discharge by gravity to a holding tank and
collected leachate will either be subsequently discharged to an appropriate facility or to the on site
leachate collection pond. A Flexible Membrane Liner(FML)may be installed under the gravel
drain and approximately 24 inches up slope.
3. The Austin Unit has a know plume of contaminated groundwater associated with it. Most of this
contamination is caused by a landfill gas release, however if we don't control future leachate
releases the plume will never be cleaned up. Installation of the optional FLM will likely prevent
future releases of leachate to the vadose zone and ultimately to groundwater. Staff concurs with the
French Drain design with the optional FLM.
4. To protect against future flood events, a soil berm will be completed along the west face of the
Austin Unit. In the future the perimeter road will run on top of this berm.
5. Before finalizing the flood protection berm Forward should investigate the magnitude and frequency
of high flow events in Littlejohns Creek due to releases from the upstream reservoir combined with
heavy rain events. Staff concurs with the flood protection berm design but lets make sure the berm
is high enough.
California Environmental Protection Agency
0 Recycled Paper
The energy challenge facing California is real. Every Californian needs to take immediate action to reduce energy consumption.
For a list of simple ways you can reduce demand and cut your energy costs, see our Web-site at http://www.swrcb.ca.gov/rwgcb5
