WMU FU -03, WMU F -West Leachate Impoundment and Desilting Basin
Forward Landfill
February 2004
Job No. 021605.03
were within the specified window of +3% to +8% of optimum (ASTM D 1557).
Results of the two moisture samples are included in Appendix D.
When the Contractor and CQA Monitor determined that the desired thickness and grade
had been accomplished, the top of the compacted clay was fine graded using a road
grader and was prepared to a smooth finish using a smooth drum compactor. Vector's
CQA Monitor observed the smooth drum rolling procedure and advised the Contractor of
areas where ridges or rough areas were present so that these areas could be reworked.
The surface of the compacted clay liner was also observed for potential desiccation
cracking. Once the surface preparation was complete, the area was approved for
geomembrane placement. A subgrade acceptance form was prepared by Vector's CQA
Monitor and signed by GSE prior to geomembrane placement. Subgrade acceptance
forms are presented in Appendix E.
Survey verification of the liner thickness and grade was performed by Quartaroli &
Associates and reviewed by the CQA Officer prior to geosynthetics placement.
0 4.4 LCRS Granular Drainage Layer and Coarse Gravel
The granular drainage layer was placed on the floor of WMU FU -03 as a leachate
collection and removal system and the coarse gravel fill was placed in the two trenches
and sump of WMU FU -03.
The drainage layer material and gravel fill was obtained from an off-site source. The
drainage gravel was placed by dumping the gravel in a pile and pushing the material
outward over the cushion geotextile with a low -ground pressure (LGP) dozer. Vector's
CQA Monitor continuously observed the placement of these materials to ensure no
damage occurred to the underlying geosynthetics and that no large wrinkles developed.
Any observed damage was marked and verified for repair.
Samples of the granular drainage material and coarse gravel were obtained and sieve
analyses and hydraulic conductivity tests were conducted.
